LaRayne, St. Joseph’s Native American Studies teacher, introduced the dancers and shared a bit about their regalia and particular style of dance, including men’s and women’s traditional, women’s jingle and men’s grass dances.

Rachel, a houseparent, and her son Izzy also joined in the event. Izzy danced and his mother shared a story and information about her own dancing and regalia. Dave, St. Joseph’s Cultural Associate, played a hand drum and offered a song for the dancers. Dave was joined by his son, Courage.

Each year, houseparents and teachers at St. Joseph’s plan special community service projects to help students practice the values of the Circle of Courage belonging, generosity, mastery and independence.

Wopila tanka - many thanks - for helping St. Joseph’s students learn about and share their Lakota (Sioux) heritage!
