St. Joseph's boys join Explorers
The Explorers learn all sorts of things, like how to tie a tie! |
Since 2011, St. Joseph’s Lakota (Sioux) boys have had a new opportunity to broaden their horizons: the Explorers Club.
The Explorers Club offers middle school boys in the community lessons in things like government, parliamentary procedure and tying a tie. But even more than that, the Explorers teach service.
Since the group was founded by a Chamberlain executive Doug Knust in 2001, more than $70,000 has been donated back to the community. Knust currently serves on St. Joseph’s Board of Directors.
The boys work together on a variety of fundraisers each year, including doing chores for people in the community and an annual carwash. They have supported a variety of projects, like the local softball complex, and donated funds to families with serious medical issues.

“Each weekly meeting is a learning experience for the guys,” said Frank, a St. Joseph’s staff member who coordinates the boys’ participation. “They learn to follow Parliamentary Procedure, how to conduct themselves during meetings and to be geared towards service. They have learned to plan activities such as dances and community service projects. They also learn to work together and help in other community projects. One of our boys even serves as the group’s secretary!”
After all their hard work, the Explorers also make time for fun! Each year, the group travels to Pierre, South Dakota, to see their state government in action during the legislative session. At the end of the school year, if funds allow, they take a trip to a major league ballpark.
Pilamaya - thank you - for helping provide lifetime opportunities to the Lakota (Sioux) children!
