Can my group volunteer at St. Joseph's Indian School?

Thank you for your kindness!

Please understand not every volunteer offer can be accepted.

St. Joseph's volunteer program on campus is extremely limited. Because of our residential situation, we are required to do extensive screening, fingerprinting and background checks on everyone who works with the boys and girls in our care.

In addition, strict federal regulations require any maintenance or construction workers to be fully certified and insured. Consequently, this limits opportunities for volunteers on our campus.

What are the requirements for volunteers?

  • Minimum work period of five days, not to exceed two weeks.
  • Groups are responsible for food, lodging and after hours activities.
  • This application must be completed and mailed to:
    St. Joseph’s Indian School
    Attn: Volunteer program
    PO Box 776
    Chamberlain, SD 57325

Once St. Joseph’s Indian School receives all necessary application material, it will be reviewed by our volunteer committee. Applications must be received at least six months prior to your requested volunteer dates.

Other ways to help

If your group doesn’t meet St. Joseph’s criteria, we hope you’ll consider another organization that helps Native American children in South Dakota.

Volunteer opportunities are available through a variety of organizations. By working in a reservation community, you will directly impact the lives of St. Joseph’s students and families. For more information, contact:
