Lakota Culture
Traditional Recipes
Food has always been at the heart of Lakota life, bringing families and communities together while passing down traditions from one generation to the next.
Traditional Lakota recipes tell stories of resilience, gratitude and connection to the land. From the sweet flavors of wóžapi — fruit pudding — to the nourishing energy of wasná — pemmican — and the tradition of fry bread, these dishes remain an important part of Lakota (Sioux) culture today.
At St. Joseph’s Indian School, Lakota students have opportunities to learn about their heritage through hands-on cultural experiences, including traditional Lakota cooking. By preparing and sharing Native American recipes, students gain a deeper appreciation for the teachings, values and traditions that have shaped their communities for generations. These cooking experiences help preserve cultural knowledge while creating meaningful connections between elders, families and youth.
We invite you to explore these traditional Lakota recipes and try them in your own kitchen. Whether you’re making Lakota fry bread, preparing wóžapi berry sauce or learning about wasná, each recipe offers a chance to celebrate Native American cuisine and gain a greater understanding of Lakota culture.
Through food, we can honor tradition, share history and keep these cherished customs alive for future generations.
